By the time students get to third grade, place value seems like old news to them BUT the practice is still very valuable since we work with larger numbers. Last year, I decided to find a new way to spice up reviewing place value. Enter, Place Value Battleship. This is a fun method for students to practice identifying place value and the value of each digit.
Students partner up to create and pick a number to be their “battleship.” Then, they try to figure out their partner’s number by asking questions like you do in Battleship, the board game.
Watch the video below for directions and an example of how to play.
Creating a short video of how to play a game or do a center has been a game changer. Students are able to watch the video and play the game or complete the center independently. This allows me to focus on meeting with students during centers.
